Crouched at the Starting Line

So I figure for my first blog post, I should set the stage for what's to come, at least insofar as I'm planning on a theme.  This will also give me the opportunity to provide some background.

My wife and I both run. We do formal races at least once a month, and while we don't run every day, I would say running is one of the things that defines us.  We talk about running with each other, and we like to talk about it with other people (when they will listen).  The other thing we talk about, and that defines us, is parenting.  Well, okay, we talk about our kids, not as much about ourselves.  We have two bright, beautiful, and active children--an eight-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl.

Other parents who run regularly (or bike, or box, etc.) can appreciate the delicate balance between family, career, and fitness.  It takes plenty of planning and patience to raise children well, especially if both parents work.  When you add running to the mix, there are even more challenges to go along with its many benefits.  How do you schedule time for running?  What about childcare during races?  What do you do when you need to increase your mileage, but your entire week is already full?

Running may seem as though it should be secondary to family and work, and in many ways that is true.  But I have found that if I don't give fitness enough weight in the great work-life balance, I simply won't be fit.  I need to make time for running, and I need to focus on it as a major part of my life.

That's why I started this journal of sorts.
